Christmas 2011 - Dads V Seniors Charity Match

Well done to all the managers and parents who played in the charity match against the LRFC Men's team.

It was a great match and the final score was 2-1 to the Dad's! The match raised over £150 for Sue Ryder in Leckhampton.

Christmas Mens Charity Match

Tuesday 27th December there will be a football match at Naunton Park played in a spirit of fun to raise money for a charity and the club.

The intention is that the LRFC Seniors team will play an LRFC Dads Team. Kit will be supplied and the match will be properly refereed. Kick off will be 10:30am.

There will be hot drinks and seasonal snacks available for a small fee pitchside and the intention is that afterwards everyone goes on to a pub. Subs for the match will be £4 a player with proceeds going 50/50 to a charity and the club. The winning team can nominate the charity.

LRFC Comedy Night

One of our Team Managers, Scott Mason, is trying to organise a comedy night for LRFC parents on a Saturday Night early in February 2012 in conjunction with Howlers Comedy Club.

For this to be a success we need to sell 120 tickets at £12.50 each. Before the club commits to this we are trying to get initial interest from parents so we can start to plan the event.

This should be a great night and will help to raise funds so that we can progress our plans to develop the club.

Guideposts Trust Donation...

Back in the summer the Leckhampton Rovers Cougars organised a team picnic to close the season. The picnic took place after Arthur Stilley Cup Final, which they won 3-1.At the picnic there were a number of games that the children and parents took part in including that old favourite beat the goalie.

The parents dug deep and we raised £80 on the day. This was matched by the club with a donation of £160 being sent to the Guideposts Trust.

This was well used by the local trust who took members of their social groups for a day out to Cattle Country. The letter that they sent us is available here.

Thanks to the Cougars parents and the club for a genereous donation.

Leckhampton Rovers Seniors narrowly miss out on County Cup

Tuesday 3rd May saw the final appearance of a Leckhampon team in a final. Leckhampton Rovers Seniors playng Lakeside for the Country Cup.

Leckhampton went 1-0 down early in the first half, Lakeside winning a lot of second ball in midfield. In a game high on physical challenge a mistake saw Lakeside go further ahead scoring a second to leave it at 2-0 at half time.

Leckhampton came into the game more in the second half, whatever Enzo said at half time obviously having an effect. For the better play a goal was not forthcoming. Lakeside then scored a third to make it 3-0 seemingly putting the game out of sight.

Then with Lakeside having used all their subs one of their players picked up an injury meaning they went down to 10 men. Leckhampton scored soon after and then, increasing the pressure won a penalty that was converted. 3-2.

The ref blew the final whistle shortly after the penalty, Leckhampton had just run out of time.

Leckhampton Rovers Cougars U11's Cup Winners

Sunday 1st May 2011 - Arthur Stilley Memorial Cup Final
Leckhampton Rovers Cougars (3) - (1) Lakeside Blues

On the Lakeside website it had the sentence "could they tame the Cougars" - well we all know how that turned out! The Arthur Stilley Memorial U11 Cup Final was played at the Abbey Business Stadium, Whaddon Road in front of a hige crowd from Leckhampton Rovers. The match was to kick off at 10am and nervous boys and parents started arriving from 9am. We were let into the ground and there was the pitch - it looked big to me so to an 11 year old must have seemed vast. That was the arena, the platform for them. Not like last time we featured in a final where at U9's we were beaten in the same venue by St. Marks. A lot of the boys were from that team and knew what defeat felt like.

This was also a Lakeside Blues team that not only have we never beaten them but they had always beaten us. This fact was left of the team talk!

The toss for the dressing rooms was done with the Lakeside manager calling tails. It was heads so we had the home dressing room. The boys went through and the team names were on the doors - nice touch!

Out on the pitch we warmed up in front of the gathering fans. Some simple loosening up, stretches and shooting into the big goals. Back inside with 10minutes. A last minute team talk and then a few words from Enzo who had come down to support the boys. Great moment from Conor who after Enzo had said his peice turned to Luca and said "...who's that?..." ( i genuinely thought everyone knew Enzo!

We came out onto the pitch through the tunnel to an almighty roar from the fans. We had excellent support and easily outnumbered the Lakeside fans.

We had the kick-off and looked sluggish. The first 10minutes was difficult to watch with the Cougars not getting going. Something that has been a problem a lot of the season. Maybe the boys were a little overawed by the occasion? We were second to the ball, apprehensive about taking control.

Gradually we started getting into the game with Jacob, Tom, Conor and Freddie getting more control through the middle, and Sam seeing the space out wide on the right. With play condensed down the left hand side there were acres and when we switched the ball it was with great effect. Sam received the ball and played it into the right channel for Daniel to run onto and finish with a lovely lob over the outrushing keeper. This first goal really changed things, we settled down and started to dominate play......

Leckhampton Sharks U10's - Cup Final Winners 2011

Sharks Attack!

For the second consecutive season, Leckhampton Sharks won the U10 Cheltenham Youth Football League in an emphatic record-breaking style - winning all but one game, scoring a massive 112 goals and only conceding 11 in both league and cup games. Their retention of the league title came with 3 games in hand, proving their ‘bite’ is surely to be reckoned with next season.

On for the double, The Sharks met a worthy and hard working Charlton Rovers side in the John Sykes cup final, held at Whaddon Road. Beautiful football was displayed, with the Sharks commanding the game from the off.

Seth Price was on fire and undeterred in defence; holding his nerve and making excellently timed tackles thus breaking down any threat. Support came from Josh Dunne, Daniel Walker and Thorben Fuchs who refused Rovers any width or time to increase possession. Luke Pardoe and Jacob Melville-Smith continued to harass in midfield, turning the ball over effortlessly and providing the attack with injection fuelled support as well as offering confident cover in their defensive duties.

Oscar Newcombe (C) hit a clean strike securing the first after excellent leg work down the wing from great paced Connor Holland, closely followed by an important second from Fergus Jackson (top scorer with 42 goals). The quick passing and movement from Holland, Jackson, Newcombe, George Hawthorne and Will Dutton ripped apart Rovers’ defence, opening up many a good opportunity. After the break, a tireless yet determined Hawthorne claimed a free kick after being brought down only yards into the Rovers’ defensive half. Melville-Smith stepped up to curve the ball past rooted players claiming the crowd-pleasing third ,confirming Leckhampton Sharks as worthy Double Champions!

Ben Partridge (GK) was awarded man of the match for great command of his area, safe hands when needed and excellent distribution. Thanks to Steve Balmer–Walters and Sam Dunne for their dedication to coaching such a great bunch of boys, also to the boys themselves for loving the game and providing the parents with such glorious football all season, it truly is a beautiful game!

Two more Cup Finals....

With Leckhampton Rovers teams already having played two cup finals there are two more to go...

The Leckhampton Rovers Falcons U9's unfortunately lost out in their final 2-1 to Southside Wolves after extra time. The Leckhampton Sharks U10's completed a league and cup double winning the U10's trophy 3-0.

Next up are the Leckhampton Rovers Cougars U11's playing at the Abbey Business Stadium on 1st May against Lakeside Blues U11's, kick-off at 10am.

The following Tuesday (3rd May) it is the turn of the Seniors who also play Lakeside in the cup final at Cheltenham Saracens FC, Petersfield Park, Tewkesbury Road, Cheltenham.The match kicks off at 1900hrs.

Coach Vs Team over London Marathon - the results!!

On Sunday (17th April) morning, about the same time as the tens of thousands of committed runners and charity fund raisers where starting to trot towards the start line of the Virgin London Marathon in London, The Leckhampton Rovers Sharks gathered for an international event.

Our aim: "to run a marathon faster than Steve". In Portugal, Ben Partridge and family took off their shoes to run on a beach. In Germany, Thorben Fuchs and family looked out over a park. And in Cheltenham, the remaining ranks of the League and Cup double winning side assembled in Hatherley Park.

By the official start time of 10 o'clock a some early runners had already completed a number of the 57 laps required to cover the marathon distance. Seth Price and Mary needed to get away to a tennis tournament. Connor Holland was already on court so his mum Jacq had been out early knocking off some laps. The remaining 40 laps would be the task for the assembled masses. The distance was tackled in a multi-player, relay format. 2 or 3 runners running together. The required lap target soon tumbled due to the tremendous level of support and commitment shown by the boys for their beloved coach. Thanks also to brothers and sisters, mums and dads who all turned out to support the team effort.

We eagerly awaited Steve's tweets to update us of his progress. By the time he was 2 miles into his marathon we had completed ours. Many hands make light work.

After completing the marathon most of the kids and were just warming up. They challenged the dads to an around-the-pitch foot race. Needless to say that the dads showed the kids a thing or two about straight line speed. Although turning corners proved more challenging.

With the racing over there was nothing left but to play football for an hour. The boys insisted in not needing any help from the dads but did allow their coach Sam Dunne to play on their team. Despite a valiant effort and some amazing refereeing decisions the dads managed to win the game 9:2.

A great fun morning was had by all. And, as Steve was crossing the line in London, we were all settling down to watch the FA Cup semi-final on the Telly.

Coach Vs Team Over London Marathon!

What a great idea this is.

On Sunday (17th April 2011) it is the Virgin London Marathon which Steve Balmer-Walters, coach of the Leckhampton Sharks, is running for CLIC Sargent. He is aiming to raise over £3,000 and you can sponsor him here. He has been training hard and is aiming for a time of less that 4hr 30minutes.

There is a twist to this though which is that while Steve will be doing a solo effort through the streets on London his team will be running laps of Hatherley Park. 53 laps to be precise! They will be starting at the same time and trying to beat him!

Duncan Thomas with an update on The Great Football Giveaway...

In late October of last year, Duncan Thomas (Leckhampton Rovers FC under-12s coach) flew out to Tanzania for three weeks to distribute 1,200 footballs to some of the world's most disadvantaged children. Duncan is a Trustee of The Great Football Giveaway, a registered charity which exists solely to put a smile on kids faces by distributing footballs and netballs to boys and girls who otherwise would not have the chance to play with a decent ball.

The majority of children in Cheltenham enjoy a relatively privileged life, but the love of kicking a ball about is something that connects all of us, whether it’s the galacticos in Barcelona, the pros at Whaddon Road, our lads in the local park, or indeed some of the most disadvantaged children on the other side of the world.

Duncan takes up the story........"We decided to visit the very far west of the country (which borders with Congo, Rwanda and Burundi) largely because it's a particularly deprived area with poor infrastructure as a consequence of very little government investment making its way from the capital Dar es Salaam in the east; power cuts were a frequent occurence.

Tanzania is an extremely poor country and the legacy of HIV/AIDS still casts a long shadow over most communities. Some of you will know of Tanzania from travel programmes.....it is a stunningly beautiful country blessed with a spectacular array of wildlife and boasts some of the best game and nature reserves in the world. However, it was always our ambition to stay clear of the tourist trail and travel to the most remote and poorest parts of the region in order to find the most disadvantaged communities........we were not disappointed.

In the three weeks we were there we visited nearly 100 primary and secondary schools, schools for the physically and mentally handicapped, schools for children with special needs (blind, deaf and notably albinos who are treated as outcasts in Tanzanian society) a dozen or so community projects that were working with street children (children who had been abandoned or who had lost family support and networks through HIV/AIDS), 10 orphanges and numerous remote villages.

All in all we reached over 100,000 children and as you can see from the pictures....thats a lot of smiles!!!!

On a personal note, I'd like to thank everybody who contributed by donating a ball, those who bought raffle tickets at our club presentation and those that generously donated raffle prizes, the club who generously donated £200 to the charity and for those that put themselves out to raise money - special thanks to Scott who raised £200 by running in the Frampton 10km. All the money raised went directly to cover the cost and the distribution of the balls.

The Great Football Giveaway - update from Tanzania

Just to let you know that we've heard from Duncan, Karl & Disco out in Tanzania and their project to deliver over 1,500 balls in one of the north-west region of the country is now fully under way. Duncan's team is one of many heading out to different regions across Tanzania, together aiming to hand-deliver over 6,500 footballs and netballs direct to some of the country's most difficult to reach kids. Hats off to them - it's incredible what they're doing.

A huge thank you to everyone who gave balls to help make this possible.

Duncan's initial comments were:

Well here we are, way out west in Tanzania in the Kibondo region which bumps right up against the Burundi border. Being so far removed from the capital has resulted in relatively little government investment for infrastructure e.g. roads, hospitals etc.

There is also the added interest of the national elections which were held yesterday and this captures the public imagination more so than in the UK, with the turnout around 75%; quite staggering for a largely rural population.

However what is capturing the children's imagination is a small team of three mzungu visiting the remotest parts of this region giving away footballs and netballs.

We spoke to a headmaster at one school who told us that some of his girl pupils think nothing of walking 18km to school despite the risk of rape en route; another at a boarding school showed us where the girls were sleeping 2 to a single bed and this where nearly 500 girls had one old netball for the whole school.

However despite the hardships, these are not unhappy children; however the reaction when being given footballs and netballs takes this to a new and explosive level of sheer joy!!!!!!......all possible due to people like yourself who have so generously donated....So on their behalf, thank you.

More later as we now head further north-west towards the Rwanda border......should be interesting

Leckhampton Presentation Day Fund Raising - July 10th 2010

Saturday 10th July was a busy day for Leckhampton Rovers. In the morning there was the dad's tournament where teams of men who really should no better dust down their trainers and shin pads, squeeze into football shirts and then play full combat 5-a-side. Then in the afternoon the club presentation was made.

Simon did a great job organising this as the manager of the previous winning team (Cougars dads).

Through the dad's tournament and raffle ticket sales there was a whopping £470 raised. This will be split (50/50) between the local charity, Focus Fund for Oncology Centre Users and Supporters and the Great Football Giveaway.

The Great Football Giveaway - 2010

What does the Great Football Giveaway do?

Put simply, we buy footballs with donations from our supporters, and give them direct to children living in poorest parts of Africa. In the last few years our volunteers have hand delivered over 15,000 footballs and netballs direct to kids in some of the poorest rural areas of Malawi, Uganda (I led that one!), Angola, Zambia and Rwanda. Over time, with the support of football fans and players alike, we want to go to more countries across Africa and Asia suffering poverty, more refugee camps, and where appropriate more areas of civil conflict - in short wherever kids are denied the chance to kick a ball about and enjoy their childhood, we'll go.

What am I up to?

In September of this year, Paul Clarke (Director of the GFG) and I, will be visiting Tanzania to deliver the first phase of a project which will see us deliver around 6,000 football (and netballs) across the country; however this will not be a stroll through the Serengeti!......rural Tanzania suffers some of the worst poverty in sub-Saharan Africa; they have one of the highest HIV rates in the world and anything we can do to put a smile on these kids faces has got to be worth the effort. So, as with previous projects we will be going well and truly off the tourist trail with a view to finding that poorer rural school with no sports facilities, that orphanage or community project doing everything it can to survive or that boy or girl by the side of the road or in the remote village just kicking a rag-ball around.

How can you help?

2010 will be undoubtedly dominated by World Cup fever; however never has the beautiful game been so tarnished by the excesses of money, hype and celebrity. The Great Football Giveaway provides you with a fantastic opportunity to show what is really important about the beautiful game and how football can be used as a force for good. My promise to you is that if you donate (i.e. buy a ball for) a tenner, I'll promise to personally deliver that ball straight into the hands (or feet) of some of the most disadvantaged children in the world.

I would be more than happy to support anything that you may wish to do with your team if you have any ideas for fundraising i.e. come and give a talk/presentation etc. I also have sponsorship forms should you wish to organise a sponsored football match/run/tournament, beat-the-goalie competion etc. ..alternatively, you may wish to organise a World Cup sweep at your place of work. I also have a number of superb and professionally made pukka DVDs which I'm happy to loan out. The rights to these have gone worldwide to various cable TV networks and it was shown to the England squad as one of their in-flight movies!! Additionally, I'm in the process of getting 5,000 A5 flyers printed and I'll be more than happy to pass these on to share with your boys and their families.

I've been invited back to Leckhampton Primary School to do another assembly (they raised £400 in 2008) and I'll be hopefully getting on BBC Radio Glos and in the Echo again. If any of you have any links to schools, youth clubs, your place of work etc, then I'll be happy to come through and tell them all about it, if you believe that this is something that will resonate with them.

Leckhampton Rovers Dads Tournament - 10th July 2010 (Morning)

As the current holders it has befallen the Leckhampton Rovers Cougars to organise this years dad's tournament.

Please register your interest and confirm your availability via this online form before the end of May.

The rules are simple
1. 6-a-side matches
2. rolling subs
3. only managers, coaches and parents of players are permitted to enter (no ringers!!)
4. max squad size 8 players
5. cost £5 per player (payable in cash on the day of the tournament)
6. all proceeds to the charity of the winning teams choice
7. tournament will start at 09:30 on the agreed date

Game length and rules in event of draw to be determined and supplied once entry is confirmed and we have enough teams to stage this.

Leckhampton Rovers - SPORT RELIEF - 20th March 2010

The Leckhampton Rovers Football Club Sport Relief Mile took place on Saturday 20/03 at the Gloucester University Park Campus.

An excellent turnout of around 60 people saw players, siblings, managers and parents from a number of teams take part in the mile. The total raised on the day was £212.50 with further money raised by individuals obtaining personal sponsorship.

Thanks to Andy Pitchford for organising this and well done to all who took part and donated. There are a couple of pictures that i will post shortly.

Leckhampton Rovers does Sport Relief - 20th March 2010

Leckhampton Rovers Football Club is hosting a Sport Relief Mile this Saturday (20/03) at 1pm at the Gloucester University Park Campus.

The course will be marked out for players, managers, aunties, uncles, mums, dads etc to do their bit for Sport Relief.

Parking will be at the University's" main car park, which is almost opposite Merestones Road, and then walk across to the green space - it's all very clear once you're there.

There will be a welcome station and a start line which you will see when you arrive.

A sponsor form is available here if you are having difficulty viewing this then please ask your manager to email you a copy.

Please let your manager know if you will be taking part so numbers can be anticipated....

The Club Presentation day in 2008 was a very successful event with a very special guest - Sir Geoff Hurst!

This was one occasion where the dads were definately more excited than the boys!!
